Before FOTO ARSENAL WIEN, Austria’s center for photography and lens-based media opens its new location in March 2025 with an exhibition on distribution and archiving strategies using the example of the Magnum agency, Martin Parr (UK), Bieke Depoorter (BE), Rafał Milach (PL), Susan Meiselas (USA) and Renée Mussai (UK) will discuss fundamental questions about artistic archives, their strategies and approaches behind them together with international academics.

Magnum as a collective and picture agency still bundles a wide range of questions in an exemplary manner: why was and is this group so influential, where and how are images seen, disseminated and circulated today? What are the problems and related issues? Which socially relevant areas can be filtered out today that still enable new perspectives in the 21st century? How can new concepts developed by Magnum members be recognized today? And why are other contexts of meaning developing today in applications and installations in physical or digital space?

The conference serves as preparation for the opening exhibition of the FOTO ARSENAL WIEN, which will explore processes ranging from contact sheets and darkroom work to archival processes.

FOTO ARSENAL WIEN opens on March 21th, 2025 in Vienna.
